Our fearless leaders
We’re a nonprofit community clinic governed by a volunteer Board of Directors. Board members are selected on the basis of their commitment to the vision and mission of the organization. Board members are expected to serve on at least one committee or task force, as well as the Board. Our Board members include patients, community leaders, professionals in the health care field, and nonprofit leaders. Please see the Board of Directors Diversity Statement.
Michael works as a consultant to nonprofits, working primarily with Minnesota-based nonprofits, supporting efforts to collaborate, create, and accelerate change. His specialty areas of practice include nonprofit financial analysis and planning, strategy development, and merger exploration and negotiation.
He is a past client of Family Tree Clinic's sex education for parents workshop.
Communications and Graphic Design
Lucas is the Communications Director at Mississippi Market. Lucas first learned of Family Tree as a recipient of Family Tree’s sex education for parents workshops. He was so impressed with the educators, that he immediately contacted Family Tree about joining the board. He brings his communications and graphic design skills to the organization.
Paul Bock was born in Wyoming - the youngest of 8 children. Raised between Wyoming and South Dakota, he got his first job (delivering papers) in the first grade and has worked ever since. After attaining an undergrad degree at Creighton University and working on biomedical research on HIV, he attended the University of Michigan where he earned his Medical degree. After residency training at HCMC, he became an Emergency Medicine specialist, and has worked as an EM Physician since 2006. Paul met his husband Eric in 2007, and they have a puppy named Rosie. Paul loves to read Sci-fi/Fantasy, bake, and crochet. He tries to garden but has a notoriously black thumb.
Independent Equity Strategist and Visionary
Beverly Bushyhead, she/her pronouns is an Independent Equity Strategist and Visionary. She demonstrates a rich equity lens and shares original curricula through cohort designed learning, group facilitation, public speaking, and web-based radio/podcast. Beverly Bushyhead provides cutting edge, state-of-the-art equity training programs and services, leadership & equity assessments, management practices, and implementation of equity strategy. Beverly follows curiosity, activating empathy and asks illuminating questions to build greater understanding and connection.
Adrienne Dorn is the Executive Director of Greater Minneapolis Community Connections (GMCC), a 115-year old social services agency that works in youth development and mentorship, poverty-relief, and social justice and anti-racism. She has been a Board Member of Family Tree Clinic since 2012 and is passionate about the clinic's work addressing health disparities.
MEMBER AT LARGE
Adrienne served as Director of Development and Executive Director of The Cedar Cultural Center for thirteen years where she more than tripled the organization’s annual budget and revolutionized its audience engagement and reputation with the surrounding East African communities through grant-funded programs, relationship-building, and strategic initiatives. In 2018, Adrienne was the Campaign Manager for Osman Ahmed, DFL candidate for MN State Representative in District 62A. Adrienne has consulted for a variety of organizations and institutions in the areas of program development and fundraising, including Augsburg University, Concordia University, MN2020, Center for Hmong Studies, African Families Development Network, and West Bank Athletic Club. Adrienne received her BA from Macalester College and was a 2017 University of Minnesota Humphrey Fellow. She lives in South Minneapolis and is a single mother to her son, Samatar.
Civic Engagement Specialist at the MNCDHH
Jaemi is a Civic Engagement Specialist at the Minnesota Commission for Deaf, DeafBlind and Hard of Hearing (MNCDHH) and will be graduating with a Master of Social Work degree in May 2021 from Gallaudet University in Washington, DC. He grew up in Duluth, Minnesota and graduated in 2019 with a Bachelor’s degree in Psychology from the University of Minnesota, Twin Cities. At the U of M, he was involved with the Social Justice Leadership Retreat as a facilitator and the LGBTQIA+ Leadership Retreat as a guest presenter. Currently, he is doing an MSW internship at DeafLEAD which is based out of Columbia, MO where he provides crisis counseling services.
Jaemi was a former Reentry and Case Management intern at Voices for a Second Chance in Washington, DC where he worked with formerly and currently incarcerated individuals to get them connected with resources, services and programs related to housing, employment, clothing, and basic necessities. Born Deaf, Jaemi communicates with spoken language, American Sign Language, and Cued Speech. As a Deaf individual, Jaemi has done speaking engagements at different universities and schools such as the University of the Pacific in San Francisco, CA; University of Minnesota; Macalester College; and Earle B. Wood Middle School in Rockville, MD. Upon graduation, he hopes to work somewhere that values diversity, acknowledges privileges and implicit or explicit biases, and makes consistent efforts to change and improve best practices to meet the wide range of needs present among clientele. On the weekends, since he’s currently in California, he likes to relax on the ocean’s beaches and go biking! In the cold Minnesota winter season he skis and snowboards!
Rev. Abigail Henderson is an ordained minister in the United Church of Christ and the Director of Leadership Development at the Minnesota Conference, UCC. Abby has a background in local church ministry, hospital chaplaincy, pastoral counseling, social work, and faith-based organizing. Abby is committed to the wellbeing queer and transgender youth, accessible healthcare for all people, and religious activism for reproductive justice. She is honored to support Family Tree's mission. She is a graduate of Wellesley College, Harvard Divinity School, and the University of Minnesota School of Social Work. Originally from New England, Abby lives in South Minneapolis with her spouse.
Jason serves as a HR Diversity and Inclusion Consultant for HealthPartners. He holds a M.A. in Organizational Leadership and Policy Development and B.A. in Communications Studies from the University of Minnesota. Jason has served as the director of the Lealtad-Suzuki (Multicultural) Center in the Department of Multicultural Life at Macalester College, where he led programmatic efforts centered on social justice that promoted the growth and development of students and the institution.
He’s written curriculum on race and identity and taguht courses in the U of M’s Leadership Studies department and served the assistant director of the Gender and Sexuality Center (GSC) for Queer and Trans Life where his work centered supporting students of color, and enhancing educational efforts for staff, faculty, students, and outreach across the University. Jason co-founded the group Tongues Untied, an educational and community building space for Queer and Trans BIPOC, and also cofounded the Annual Upper Midwest Queer and Trans BIPOC Conference, now in its 5th year has a mission to create a revolutionary loving and learning space where minoritized community members can celebrate their struggles, rediscover their magic, and thrive together. Jason lives with his partner in North Minneapolis with their two dogs. When he’s not out being a - self described rabble rousing diva - Jason spends much of his time reading and growing vegetables in his garden for family and friends.
Riley is a an nonprofit consultant (Karbon Coaching LLC) focused on growing fundraising and board engagement at small to medium-sized organizations in the Twin Cities. She holds a B.A. in Political Science from Gustavus Adolphus College and a Fundraising Certificate from University of Saint Thomas Business School. A board member since 2017, she first got involved with Family Tree after an incredible patient experience back in 2010 and has been a patient and supporter ever since.
She believes the clinic's radical inclusiveness, educational outreach and community engagement us on the forefront of healthcare for marginalized communities and keeps patients coming back. When not fundraising for many great Twin Cities causes, you can find her climbing at Vertical Endeavors, singing for VocalPoint Chorus, mentoring new fundraisers, planning her next international trip or competing nationally in blues dancing.
Fairview Health Services
Allison is a family nurse practitioner that works at Fairview Eagan Clinic since 2007. She likes doing family practice and the variety of patients that practice brings her, but has a special interest in managing hormonal therapy for transgender and gender nonconforming patients. She also does project management leadership for the health system and likes understanding the wider perspective in health care. Allison also works part time at Planned Parenthood providing medical care, which leads to an alternate perspective in healthcare. When not at work, Allison enjoys riding her bike and running, travel, and caring for her two daughters.
University of Minnesota
Koa is a cultural anthropologist-turned-lender and financial specialist at Propel Nonprofits. As a researcher, educator, and nonprofit consultant, Koa has worked closely with folks directing social change in widely diverse settings, both here in the Twin Cities and back home in India and has an ongoing commitment to tackling the structural inequities organizing our world(s). Koa values building relationships and believes that truly generative insights come out of attentiveness, curiosity, and deep personal engagement.
Family Tree Clinic is a unicorn in the field of sexual healthcare and education, and Koa cherishes time spent serving on the board of an organization that cares so much about marginalized experiences and voices. Movies, movement-based meditation, and magical time by the lakes keep Koa’s mood up.
Willow is a founding partner of Victus Engineering, a minority-owned architectural engineering firm that works with architects and building owners to design thoughtful, efficient, and sustainable building systems. Willow also promotes sustainable design and construction practices as an active volunteer with the regional chapter of the United States Green Building Council (USGBC). As an entrepreneur, Professional Engineer, and sustainability advocate, she contributes to the board her business management experience, facility operation knowledge, and passion for sustainability. Having navigated the challenges of gender-affirming care herself, she appreciates Family Tree Clinic’s commitment to providing care options to underserved communities.
Willow is an MBA candidate at the Carlson School of Management at the University of Minnesota and holds a Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering from the University of Kansas. She lives with her partner in the Cedar-Riverside neighborhood of Minneapolis, where she enjoys container gardening, cooking, and playing the guitar … poorly
Sally Nixon is a Community Connector, Artist, Auntie, Healer and Nature Enthusiast. She is a descendant of African and Western European ancestry and was raised in a mixed race home within a multi-cultural circle of chosen family. Sally has worked in the Social Work field for over 20 years in a variety of roles, with a focus on public health for the past 10 years. She is an experienced Sexual Health Educator and is passionate about sex-positive and equitable reproductive care for all. Trained as a Biodynamic Craniosacral Therapist, Sally is involved in the healing arts through many avenues, while continuing to engage in learning about various traditional healing practices.
Sally is active in organizing and event planning in her beloved QTPOC community and, in addition to serving on the Family Tree Clinic board, she also serves as Vice President to the Board of Directors at Seward Co-op. Sally also enjoys dancing whenever possible, spending hours digging in the garden, family time, playing any instrument she can get her hands on and working to perfect the world's best gluten free cinnamon roll.
Chris returned to the Family Tree board after having served as board president in the early 1980’s and is recently retired from the Department of Human Services as the Policy Development Manager. During her years there, she managed health care services coverage policy for the government-sponsored health care programs - MNCare and Medicaid. Chris graduated from Winona State University with a BS in nursing and received a MPH in health education from the University of Minnesota. Following retirement from DHS, she consulted with states regarding implementation of the Affordable Care Act and with the Minnesota Community Health Worker Alliance. Chris lives in SW Minneapolis with her wife Sheila.
Partner at Rubric Legal
Emmett Robertson is a partner at Rubric Legal and focuses on advising nonprofit organizations on the nonprofit-specific issues that affect their work, particularly in the areas of tax, governance, and regulatory compliance. Emmett has proudly always offered services to nonprofits on a sliding-fee scale to make it more reasonable for all sizes of organizations to afford legal services from someone who focuses all of their professional energies on the nonprofit sector.
Emmett’s other current professional activities currently include teaching a clinic at Mitchell Hamline School of Law; serving as a co-chair and regular speaker for the Hennepin County Bar Association’s LINC program (a nonprofit board training program for lawyers); serving as a frequent presenter on governance, tax and other issues related to nonprofit organizations; and he is a volunteer attorney for the Children’s Law Center representing youth in the foster care system. Emmett’s spare time is spent exploring a new car-free life as a downtown dweller, riding a Triumph Bonneville (when it is warm enough), hanging out with his crazy cats, and spending time with the amazing people in his life.
Violence Free Minnesota
Becky is the Communications Director at Violence Free Minnesota, a statewide coalition of over 90 programs working to end relationship abuse. She specializes in asset-based strategic communications grounded in equity and justice. Prior to Violence Free Minnesota, Becky served as NARAL Pro-Choice Minnesota’s Communications and Development Manager. Becky has contributed to social justice movements for nearly two decades and has served on the main organizing body of many grassroots organizations.
Becky has participated in fellowships at the Human Rights Project through the Urban Justice Center and at CoreAlign, a sexual and reproductive justice movement building initiative. She is a long-time volunteer at the Women's Prison Book Project, a collective that provides reading materials to incarcerated women and trans people across the country. Becky has served in a variety of roles as a board member for Family Tree Clinic and remains awestruck by Family Tree's liberatory approach to healthcare. Becky lives and loves in South Minneapolis with her partner and cat.
Laureen Tews Harbert
Laureen has nearly 20 years of professional experience in the nonprofit sector in program planning and implementation, grantmaking, community planning, and organizational leadership roles. Her areas of topical expertise include reproductive health, abortion, HIV/AIDS, adoption, grantmaking, and public health. She has worked as a counselor at Planned Parenthood of Southeastern Pennsylvania, taught undergraduate courses in Human Sexuality at Temple University, directed medical abortion education and access initiatives at the National Abortion Federation, and led the AIDS Funding Collaborative in Cleveland, OH.
She has authored numerous medical education and patient education resources and is a co-author of the 2005 edition of "Our Bodies, Ourselves". Since moving to Minneapolis in 2012, she has been a full-time parent and an active community volunteer and leader. Laureen holds a Master’s in Public Health from Temple University and a B.A. in psychology from Colgate University.
